EYFS Schemas Explained (with Classroom Examples)
How to recognise children's repeated patterns of play and support their cognitive development without interrupting their flow.

Schemas are patterns of repeated behaviour that children use to explore the world. They are not random habits or disruptive phases. They are essential stages of cognitive development.
When a child repeatedly drops a spoon from a highchair, they are testing gravity. When they paint their entire picture solid black, they are exploring the enveloping schema, covering and concealing to see how objects can disappear from view.
Understanding schemas helps you move from managing challenging behaviour to actively supporting deep learning. This guide covers the nine main play schemas you will see in your setting. It includes real classroom examples and practical provision ideas.
What are schemas in early years?
Think of a schema as a child’s internal blueprint for learning. A child repeatedly applies a specific physical action to sort new sensory data. They will repeat this action until they fully master the underlying concept.
The psychologist Jean Piaget brought the concept of the schema into child development. He described how children construct understanding through physical experiences. In the UK, the early years pioneer Chris Athey built upon this work. She defined a schema as a pattern of repeatable behaviour into which experiences are assimilated.
Today, early years experts describe schemas simply as children’s patterns of learning and thinking. These fascinations are usually patterns of movement that completely capture a child’s attention.
Your role is to observe and support these patterns. The Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage asks practitioners to understand how children learn. Schemas sit right at the heart of the playing and exploring characteristic of effective learning.
The 9 main play schemas
Children display many different patterns of behaviour. However, around nine schemas are the most commonly observed in the early years. The exact list and naming varies between authors, but these are the patterns you will see most often. Recognising these helps you tailor your continuous provision to match what your children actually need.
1. The Trajectory Schema
The trajectory schema is a fascination with movement in straight lines. This can be the movement of objects or the child’s own body through space.
Children exploring this schema are learning about physics. They are testing speed, distance, and cause and effect. Trajectory behaviours are frequently mislabelled as aggressive because they often involve throwing or dropping.
Classroom behaviour examples: A baby might repeatedly drop items from a highchair. A toddler might push a pram back and forth in a rigid straight line. Older children might run up and jump off steps, or watch running water flow down a drain.
What to provide: You cannot stop a trajectory schema, but you can channel it safely.
- Set up target practice areas outdoors with soft balls or beanbags.
- Provide water trays equipped with funnels, droppers, and lengths of plastic guttering.
- Offer ribbons on sticks for children to wave up and down.
- Set up wooden ramps and toy cars to explore speed and distance safely.
2. The Enveloping Schema
The enveloping schema is an interest in covering things entirely. Children with this schema want to hide objects in discrete places or wrap themselves up completely.
This schema lets children explore how objects can be hidden and then revealed. For very young children it links to object permanence, the early understanding that something still exists even when it cannot be seen. It is a highly comforting schema for many children.
Classroom behaviour examples: A child might wrap a doll in multiple layers of blankets. They might cover an entire painting in one solid colour until the original image disappears. You might find them hiding entirely inside a large cardboard box.
What to provide: Enveloping play requires resources that conceal and cover.
- Provide ample dressing up clothes, saris, and large pieces of camouflage fabric to make dens.
- Keep a supply of envelopes, small boxes, and paper for wrapping presents.
- Offer nesting dolls, Russian dolls, or small items that can be buried deep in a sandpit.
- Provide thick blankets in your quiet reading areas.
3. The Enclosure Schema
The enclosure schema is about creating borders. While it is similar to enveloping, enclosure focuses more on perimeters and boundaries than complete covering.
Enclosure play develops spatial awareness. It also introduces early mathematical concepts relating to volume, capacity, and geometry.
Classroom behaviour examples: Children often construct tight fences around toy farm animals. They might climb into laundry baskets or plastic storage crates. They might draw continuous borders around the edges of their artwork.
What to provide: Children need resources that allow them to define spaces.
- Save cardboard boxes of varying sizes.
- Set up pop-up tents and play tunnels indoors and outdoors.
- Provide wooden building blocks and connecting train tracks to create perimeters and car parking spaces.
- Offer different sized sorting bowls, buckets, and baskets in your loose parts area.
4. The Transporting Schema
The transporting schema is a powerful urge to carry or move items from one place to another. Children with this schema are highly motivated to relocate resources.
Embracing this schema requires flexibility from adults. Children will rarely leave resources where you placed them. The learning process is the physical act of moving the items and understanding journeys.
Classroom behaviour examples: A child might fill their pockets or a wheelbarrow with small items like pebbles. They will carry these toys across the room and dump the collection in a new area. They might push a toy pram heavily loaded with unrelated items.
What to provide: Provide tools that make moving things easier.
- Hang bags, baskets, and small buckets on low pegs.
- Ensure outdoor areas have trolleys, pushchairs, and wheelbarrows.
- Provide ample loose parts like stones, shells, and bottle tops that can be easily collected and relocated.
- Avoid getting frustrated when the home corner food ends up in the construction area.
5. The Connecting Schema
The connecting schema is a deep fascination with how objects join together and come apart. Children exploring this are learning about structural integrity and the mechanics of fastening.
This schema is foundational for fine motor skill development. It requires intense concentration and problem-solving.
Classroom behaviour examples: A child might tie string between milk crates. They might stick pieces of paper together with copious amounts of masking tape. They will spend ages linking train tracks together.
What to provide: Offer plenty of joining materials.
- Keep a well stocked creation station with string, ribbons, pipe cleaners, elastic bands, and masking tape.
- Provide construction toys like Duplo, Lego, or magnetic tiles.
- Set up a supervised woodwork bench with real hammers, nails, and soft wood blocks.
- Offer threading activities with large beads and thick laces.
6. The Rotational Schema
The rotational schema is an urge to explore things that turn, spin, or go round. This physical and visual exploration builds an understanding of cause and effect. It also gives children vital sensory feedback regarding balance and motion.
Classroom behaviour examples: A child might turn a toy car upside down just to spin the wheels. They often spin their own bodies in circles until they fall over dizzy. You might see them drawing spiralling circles on paper.
What to provide: Resources that move in circles are essential here.
- Provide busy boards with cogs, wheels, and dials.
- Offer windmills and spinning tops in your outdoor area.
- Provide rolling pins in the playdough area and water wheels in the water tray.
- Take trips to local parks to use roundabouts and tyre swings.
7. The Positioning Schema
The positioning schema is a compulsion to place objects in a specific order, alignment, or pattern.
Positioning is the bedrock of early mathematical thinking. It directly supports the skills required for counting, pattern recognition, and categorisation. Children with this schema are highly organised in their play.
Classroom behaviour examples: Children will line up toy cars in perfect rows. They might categorise items strictly by colour or size. They often stack things very neatly and might insist on sitting in the exact same spot every day.
What to provide: Vast quantities of similar items work best for this schema.
- Provide buckets containing fifty or more uniform buttons, pebbles, or shells for intense sorting routines.
- Offer sorting trays, egg cartons, and muffin tins.
- Provide resources that encourage mathematical positioning language, like making long trains or hungry caterpillars.
- Give children the time and space to finish their alignments without being rushed to tidy up.
8. The Orientation Schema
The orientation schema is a desire to view the world from different physical vantage points. By experimenting with their bodily orientation, children develop profound spatial awareness. They learn about height, weight, width, and physical balance.
Classroom behaviour examples: A child might bend over to look backward through their own legs. They might hang upside down from climbing frames. They often lie flat on the floor to examine objects from underneath a glass table.
What to provide: Safe physical challenges are key to supporting orientation.
- Ensure access to safe climbing apparatus, slides, and soft play mats.
- Place shatterproof mirrors on the floor or attach them to walls at unusual angles.
- Provide magnifying glasses, binoculars, or coloured perspex viewing windows.
- Allow safe indoor climbing where appropriate, such as stepping stones or low balance beams.
9. The Transforming Schema
The transforming schema is an intense interest in how materials change state or react when combined. Often viewed by adults as simply making a mess, the transforming schema is essentially early chemistry.
Children are testing hypotheses about physical properties and material changes. They want to know what happens when dry meets wet, or when colours mix.
Classroom behaviour examples: A child might mix paint colours together on paper until the whole page turns brown. They will add sand to the water tray. They are constantly mixing ingredients together to see the result.
What to provide: Embrace the mess and provide dedicated spaces for mixing.
- Ensure your outdoor area has an accessible mud kitchen.
- Provide robust outdoor water play areas with dirt and sand nearby.
- Offer baking ingredients like flour, water, and food colouring for potion making.
- Set up a variety of paints and mixing palettes, and do not worry when the colours get muddy.
How to spot a schema in a child
Spotting schemas requires skilled observation and restraint. You cannot force a schema to happen. You should not interrupt one when it does.

Look for flow
Scan your setting for children who are highly involved in their play. If a child is completely immersed and concentrating deeply, they are likely exploring a schema. Wait and observe without interrupting.

Identify the repetition
Determine if the action is a pattern. A fleeting interest in a toy car is not a schema. Repeatedly spinning the wheels of every car over several days is a rotational schema.

Cross-reference contexts
Verify if the behaviour manifests across different areas. A child with an enclosure schema might build fences outdoors, draw circles indoors, and climb inside boxes in the home corner.

Adapt the environment
Once identified, feed the schema. Provide open-ended loose parts that allow the child to pursue their fascination deeply. Do not force a redirection if the play is safe.
When you spot a schema, act as a facilitator. Use sustained shared thinking to wonder aloud with the child. Saying something like, “I wonder why that wheel spins so fast?” models language linked to their thinking without taking over the play.
Recording schema-based observations
Early years practitioners operate within a constant cycle of observation, assessment, and planning. The Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage requires practitioners to understand children’s learning and development through observation.
However, the updated Development Matters guidance explicitly warns against excessive data generation. It is not designed to be used as a tick-list. Good practice means taking fewer, richer narrative EYFS observations that capture deep schematic learning.
A narrative observation example
Here is an example of what a strong, narrative observation of a schema looks like in practice:
Observation: Leo spent twenty minutes in the continuous provision repeatedly filling a small metal bucket with wooden blocks. He carried them across the room and emptied them under the reading teepee. When the blocks were gone, he returned to fill the bucket with pinecones. He demonstrated deep concentration.
Professional Judgement: Leo is demonstrating a strong transporting schema. He is exploring volume and weight transfer, and is highly motivated to move objects across spaces.
Next Steps: Enhance the outdoor provision tomorrow with wheelbarrows and a variety of natural loose parts to allow Leo to transport materials on a larger scale.

How to support schemas in your provision
The sector guidance Birth to 5 Matters actively instructs practitioners to observe and support schemas. It notes that settings should adapt spaces so that children have an opportunity to build on their natural patterns of movement.

Ensure your continuous provision is stocked with open-ended loose parts. A plastic toy kitchen only does one thing. A crate of pinecones, lengths of guttering, and a stack of cardboard boxes can serve a transporting schema today, an enclosure schema tomorrow, and a trajectory schema the day after.
Give children time. Early years experts recommend providing long, uninterrupted periods of free-flow play where possible. Schemas require deep concentration.
If you constantly interrupt children to move them onto adult-led activities, they will never have the chance to fully explore their internal blueprints for learning. Observe closely, provide the right loose parts, and let the children show you how they learn.
Frequently asked questions
- Are schemas always present in every child?
- No. While all children explore the world through play, not every child will exhibit obvious or dominant schemas. Some children focus intensely on one schema for months, while others may never appear to demonstrate them strongly.
- Can children show multiple play schemas at once?
- Yes. It is entirely normal for children to exhibit clusters of schemas simultaneously. A child might fill a bag with pebbles, which is the transporting schema, and then line them up meticulously on a table, which is the positioning schema.
- Do children grow out of early years schemas?
- Not entirely. The intense physical manifestation of schemas usually peaks in the early years, but the cognitive blueprints persist into adulthood. A child with a dominant positioning schema may simply grow into an adult who relies on a highly organised workspace.
- Are schemas a sign of autism or neurodivergence?
- Repetitive schematic play is a normal part of typical development for all children. However, for neurodivergent learners, schemas often remain a primary way of making sense of a chaotic world. Identifying these schemas provides a positive framework to understand their interests.
