Pebble Sign-In: Name Writing Writing Activity for Reception
25 March 2026
Name writing is intensely personal and often a child's first proud writing achievement. This simple daily routine turns the morning sign-in into a tactile, independent writing exercise that builds identity and letter familiarity.
- Smooth, flat stones or pebbles (or thick cardboard circles)
- White chalk or dry-wipe markers
- A permanent marker (for the teacher)
- A shallow basket to hold the master pebbles
- A tray or mat for the 'signed in' blank pebbles
Step-by-Step Setup
1. Prepare the Master Pebbles
Before the children arrive, use a permanent marker to clearly write each child's name on a pebble. Ensure you use a capital letter for the initial and lower-case for the rest, modelling the standard format.
2. Set the Morning Challenge
Place the master pebbles in a basket near the door. As children arrive, their first 'job' is to rummage through the basket to spot their own name—a brilliant visual recognition task.
3. Copy and Sign In
Provide blank pebbles and chalk alongside the basket. Ask the child to look at their master pebble and copy their name onto a blank one. "Which letter does your name start with?"
4. Place on the Sign-In Tray
Once they have written their name, they proudly place their chalked pebble onto a designated tray or mat to show they are present for the day. It is a wonderful, calming transition activity.
5. Wipe Clean for Tomorrow
At the end of the day, have a helper use a damp cloth to wipe the chalk off the blank pebbles so they are completely ready to be used again the next morning.
Classroom Adaptations
Large class?
Spread the master pebbles across multiple baskets or tables to avoid a bottleneck at the classroom door.
Limited resources?
If finding 30 flat stones is tricky, cut circles out of recycled cardboard boxes and use regular pencils.
Mixed ages?
Younger ones might just find their master pebble and place it in the tray without copying it quite yet.
High ability?
Turn the blank pebble over and ask if they can write their surname on the back from memory.
