Recycled Castles: Junk Modelling DT Activity for St George's Day
27 March 2026
Junk modelling is a staple of early years design and technology. This activity invites children to collaborate, problem-solve, and explore 3D shapes as they transform ordinary household recycling into a magnificent medieval castle for their knights and dragons.
- Assorted clean recycling (cereal boxes, toilet roll tubes, egg cartons)
- Masking tape (easier for little fingers to tear than sticky tape)
- Child-safe scissors
- Felt-tip pens or crayons for decorating
- Optional: small toy figures for scale testing
Step-by-Step Setup
1. Gather the Junk
Pile the clean recycling in the centre of the table. Discuss the different 3D shapes. "Which box would make the strongest walls? Can we use these cylinders (toilet rolls) for the tall towers?"
2. Plan Together
Encourage the children to talk to their peers and formulate a simple plan before taping. This promotes crucial negotiation skills. Ask them where the dragon will live and where the knight will stand.
3. Construct and Tape
Let the children build! Show them how to use masking tape to secure boxes together. Masking tape is fantastic as children can tear it independently, boosting their fine motor confidence.
4. Add the Details
Once the main structure is built, children can use felt-tips to draw on brick patterns, wooden drawbridges, or windows. They can safely snip the tops of the toilet rolls to create battlements.
5. Play and Evaluate
Bring over the small-world figures (knights, horses, dragons). Let the children play with their creation. Ask: "Is the drawbridge big enough for the horse? What part of your castle is the strongest?"
Classroom Adaptations
Large class?
Create one giant collaborative castle in a tuff tray, allowing small groups to add different sections over the day.
Limited resources?
Ask parents to bring in clean cardboard boxes a week in advance to ensure you have plenty of free materials.
EAL learners?
Emphasise the 3D shape names (box, tube) and positional language (on top, inside, under) during construction.
High ability?
Challenge them to create a moving part, such as a drawbridge that opens and closes using a piece of string.
