Mystery Story Sack: Story Comprehension Reading Activity for Reception

18 March 2026

Bring a new focus text to life before you even open the cover with a mystery story sack. By pulling out everyday objects related to the book, children actively build connections, predict themes, and develop the vocabulary needed for deep comprehension.

Materials Needed
  • A fabric bag or pillowcase
  • 3-4 everyday items linked to a focus text (e.g., a wooden spoon, small bowl, and blanket for *Goldilocks*)
  • The focus picture book
  • A small rug or designated 'story circle' area

Step-by-Step Setup

1. Prepare the Sack

Gather your everyday items that feature in the chosen book. Hide them securely inside your fabric sack or pillowcase before the children sit down on the carpet for story time.

2. Introduce the Mystery

Sit with the children and dramatically shake the bag. Tell them you have a new story to read, but some pieces of it have escaped into your bag! Ask: "What do you think could be inside?"

3. Reveal and Discuss

Invite a child to pull out one item. Pass it around the circle and discuss it. Introduce any 'wow' vocabulary now. Ask: "What is this used for?" and "Who might use this?"

4. Make Connections

Once all items are out, lay them in the middle. Ask the children to be detectives. "How do these things belong together? What kind of story are we going to read?" Accept all creative ideas!

5. Read and Spot

Read the focus text together. Whenever an item from the bag appears in the story or illustrations, encourage the children to point to the real object in the middle of the circle.

Classroom Adaptations

Large class?

Pass the bag around the circle to a target group of 5 children while the rest act as the 'describers'.

Limited resources?

Use a cardboard box with a hand-hole cut in the top instead of a fabric sack.

Mixed ages?

Pair younger children with older buddies to discuss what the mystery object might be used for.

High ability?

Challenge them to think of an alternative item that wasn't in the bag but would still fit the story.
