Natural Loose Parts Art: Transient Design Art Activity for Easter

2 April 2026

Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, this beautiful activity begins with a nature walk to collect loose parts. Children then arrange their natural treasures into transient patterns—creating temporary, glue-free art that celebrates the arrival of spring.

Materials Needed
  • Collected natural loose parts (leaves, twigs, blossoms, pebbles)
  • Large sheets of plain sugar paper (or flattened cardboard boxes)
  • A thick marker pen
  • Small baskets for the nature walk
  • A tablet or camera to photograph the finished work

Step-by-Step Setup

1. Go on a Nature Walk

Take the children outside to collect natural loose parts. Look for fallen leaves, twigs, daisies, and smooth pebbles. Give them small baskets or recycled tubs to hold their spring treasures.

2. Prepare the Canvas

Back inside, roll out a large piece of plain sugar paper (or flattened cardboard boxes). Draw giant, simple outlines of Easter eggs or chicks with a thick marker pen for the children to fill.

3. Introduce Transient Art

Explain that they will place their natural items inside the shapes to make beautiful patterns, but without using glue! Ask: 'Can you make a pattern around the edge using only your pebbles?'

4. Arrange and Pattern

Let the children arrange their twigs and leaves. Observe how they group items by colour or size. Encourage them to move things around if they change their mind. 'I love your leafy stripes!'

5. Capture the Moment

Because transient art is temporary, give the children an iPad or camera to take photos of their finished designs. They can then sweep the items away, ready for another group to try.

Classroom Adaptations

Large class?

Work collaboratively on one giant cardboard egg on the classroom floor, adding to it over the course of the day.

Limited resources?

Nature provides everything for free! If you lack outdoor space, ask parents to bring in a handful of leaves or twigs from their walk to school.

EAL learners?

Use the nature walk to emphasize simple nature vocabulary like 'stick', 'leaf', 'green', and 'stone'.

High ability?

Challenge them to create repeating ABAB patterns using two different types of natural objects.
