Ocean Rescue: Narrative Retelling Literacy Activity for Earth Day
26 March 2026
Inspired by the popular EYFS text Somebody Swallowed Stanley, this water tray activity brings the story to life. Children use nets to 'rescue' toy sea creatures from clean plastic waste, providing a rich, concrete hook for vocabulary development and narrative retelling. We focus heavily on the positive action of keeping animal habitats safe!
- A copy of 'Somebody Swallowed Stanley' (or similar conservation story)
- Water tray (or large washing-up bowl)
- Toy sea creatures
- Clean plastic waste (carrier bags, small bottles). Ensure all plastic items are large enough to avoid choking — avoid milk bottle lids or other items smaller than a 50p coin with this age group.
- Small fishing nets or kitchen tongs
- Towels for spills
Step-by-Step Setup
1. Read the Story
Read the story together during carpet time (keep it under 15 minutes). Focus on the emotions of the animals and how the plastic bag didn't belong in the ocean. Frame the children as the 'Earth's helpers'.
2. Prepare the Water Tray
Fill the water tray and add the toy sea creatures. Add the clean plastic waste. Ensure all plastic is washed and safe for play. Place the nets and tongs on the side.
3. Model the Rescue
Show the children how to safely use a net to fish out a piece of plastic. "Look, I've saved the turtle's home! Let's put this plastic in the recycling bin where it belongs."
4. Free Play Rescue
Let the children take over in small groups. As they play, encourage them to retell parts of the story. "Is that a jellyfish or a plastic bag? How does the whale feel now his home is clean?"
5. Story Sequencing
Have a dry area nearby with a simple washing line and pegs. Provide pictures from the story and challenge the children to peg them in the correct order based on what they've just played.
Classroom Adaptations
Large class?
Rotate groups through the water tray while others draw pictures of their favourite sea creature on the carpet.
Limited resources?
If you don't have toy sea creatures, cut fish shapes out of colourful craft foam—they float perfectly on the water!
EAL learners?
Pre-teach key nouns (turtle, whale, bag, net) using physical objects before reading the full story.
High ability?
Encourage them to write simple CVC labels for the animals they have rescued (e.g., 'crb' for crab, 'fsh' for fish).
